FRENCH COWBOY is born of the shared love of Julien Crouigneau and Mia Macfarlane of photography.
One day when I was barely two my mom let me push her out of her bedroom. She was curious so she ran outside the house so she could watch me through the window. I climbed up on a chair by her vanity and started putting on her makeup. I loved playing dress up as a kid. Putting on my mom's sequin tube tops and high healed shoes and then putting on a dance show in the lobby or the restaurant of the hotel/residence we lived in was the best childhood ever. Dress-up, dancing, barbies and drawing were my favorite things to do. I have not changed one bit today.
I had one of the best jobs ever as the creative director of NY lifestyle magazine DOWNTOWN. I got to art direct fashion and mixology still life shoots and then I got to layout everything in a beautiful magazine. It was awesome.
Now I am in Paris for the second time in my life and I am having a ball playing with my partner in crime Julien. We don't stop creating. We have our own magazine now, IRK magazine, and we collaborate with some amazing artists and photographers. We also design t-shirts and clothes and come up with crazy photo shoots of our own.
Recently we went to see an exhibit at the Quai Branly. I of course took it as an opportunity to get dressed up and we had so much fun shooting pictures with the African and Asian masks and climbing into the long grass in the museum gardens. Every day is an opportunity to create and we live to shoot!
Me too, when I was small I tried on my mothers fur coats but I quickly decided that it was too bizarre and so I stopped.
A little lost in my early studies I was very lucky to get into an excellent design school in Paris. Once I graduated, I quickly started working for Ph. Starck who was my golden ticket for all the opportunities I had after.
I was the graphic art director for Thomson RCA worldwide and art director for several magazines: One about design, INTRAMUROS, another about art and rock, KEITH MAGAZINE, and now at the wonderful and best ever, IRK magazine. I am also a product designer for cosmetics including the crazy Christian Louboutin, but also L’Oreal Paris and Maybelline New York...
French Cowboy is born from meeting Mia and our desire to create our own images enriched from our multiple experiences and cultures.
